' This was a gear wheel & gearbox manufacturing factory. Originally the building was built for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company who started off in 1919 but went bust in 1921. The Sheds & land leading to the riverside was auctioned off in 1925 but no one bought it. Items then were sold off gradually & cheaply & Gateshead company Reay Gear Works ended up with the Sheds & started off in the town. Later George Angus bought the Factory & continued Gear making. Later still Richardson Westgarth bought the factory calling themselves RW Transmissions. They closed down in the mid 1970s. Photo from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website '
