' Pelaw Main Staiths at Bill Quay. Pelaw Main was a Colliery near Chester Le Street area & it's coal was brought to these Staiths in rail trucks. From Springwell near Wrekenton the trucks were lowered by gravity all the way to the Staiths. They were kept from gaining speed downhill by a rope haulage system which hauled them back to Springwell once emptied. The attached photo is from my www.gatesheadeast.co.uk website '
