' This wider area of the Grand Union Canal is a "winding" hole, an area for turning boats around. There were a lot of wharfs in Berkhamsted mainly for timber and coal but also Coopers (sheepdip fame) and the local mills used canal transport. If you walk along the canal today between Canal Fields (waitrose) and the Rising Sun pub you will find a series of interpretation panals along the towpath giving you the history of the canal. '
