' A Mechanics' Institute, formed in the 1840s, transferred to the Stephenson Memorial Schools in 1860. In 1878 the facilities were moved to Palmer's shipyard draughting office. In 1882 they went to this building, the recently vacated Primitive Methodist Chapel. The secretary was John Crowthers, draper, and the organisation seems not to have survived his death in 1913. 27 Church Street became home to the 1st Howdon Scouts. '
