The 1934 new Gas works with modern Woodhall-Duckham system of coal gas production this was installed to replace the original systems that had been in use since 1834 when gas first came to Melton Mowbray and this was used to light 40 gas lamps in the town. The cost of the new works was £12,000. This plant continued in operation until 1955 when it was closed down and Melton was connected to the Gas grid.
