First opened in 1926, at its height in the 1950s it was the largest radio transmitting station in the world, with a total of 57 radio transmitters, covering an area of 1,600 acres. It was closed down between 2003 and 2007 and the masts removed. A lot of the associated buildings were converted in the 2020s to create a new secondary school, Houlton School, which is named after the huge housing estate that now covers the transmitting station site.
