The River Mimram or Maran. The river rose near Whitwell and joined the River Lea at Hertford. The Digswell viaduct (see picture elsewherer in the collection) crossed the Mimram valley about a mile or so east of Welwyn. The river was beautifully clear - near the source at Whitwell I seem to recall there were watercress beds - a sign of the water's purity. In the summer school holidays in the mid 60s I remember spending a lot of time at the river fishing for sticklebacks. '
