When Jarrow's streets were demolished in the early 1960s, a lot of the bricks and rubble were dumped into this very deep pit shaft which had filled with water over the years and became a dangerous pond probably 100ft deep. The pit shaft was hundreds of years old and an old 'Bell Pit' probably dug by the Monks to reach the Monkton coal seam. ( google the name) '
