Site of the Winlaton Mill Ironworks of Ambrose Crowley III begun around 1697. Consisted of dams. leats. blast furnaces, slitting mills and workers housing. One of the earliest integrated industrial sites in the Europe and pre-dating the Abraham Derby works at Coalbrookdale. Crowley and his heris operated a sophistacted production and supply system from here and warehouses at Swalwell and Greenwhich on the Thames, largely to supply the British Navy. The works were closed by the mid 19th century and later built over by a 20th cetury coke works. Restoration as a park around 1992 has left part of the dam and spillway (a scheduled monument) on display.
