' This little Pond was very very deep and during discussions on what it was we think it was the remains of a Bell Pit that the Monks used for obtaining coal. The closest coal seam is the Monkton Seam about 90 feet down. Rubble from the demolished houses from Jarrow town centre was disposed of into this 'pond'. '
