' Site of the Jackblock flats. Alpha House,is an accommodation tower block, also known as the "Jackblock flats'', and was the first example of the advanced "Jackblock" method of construction. Using this system, the ground-floor slab was cast first, and acted as a base for the 17 floors and the roof. Once a floor had been completed, it was jacked up a full storey in height, at a speed of 1 metre in 2 hours.Built by Costain in 1962. '
