According to an 1869 directory and the 1872 Lighting Rates, the first house in Church Street was a small Beerhouse called The Magpie. This and a few other smaller Beerhouses in the area closed in the 1870's mainly due to the Temperance movement pressuring for tightening the regulation of beer licenses. '
