Works in progress to deepen and widen the River Rea's channel as a flood defence. The river at this point begins to run in a blue brick lined steep sided cutting with a shallowly dished brick floor. Normally the river occupies about two thirds of the total width of the channel and is perhaps a foot deep in the middle, in flood it fills the whole width of the channel to a depth of several feet. The photo shows the view upstream from Edward Road bridge in 1979.
