The ground floor on this corner was 2-4 Cuthbert St and was the 'Relief Office' which was a bit like the Dole. Men would queue in the back lane one day a week for some financial help. My gran lived upstairs (Cecilia Rodger) and the entrance to her Flat was via the back yard up an external staircase. Cecilia was a very shy lady so on that day she stayed in the house all day rather than go in and out past a queue of men. '
