The vast Aintree marshalling yard. Part of it was used every year to position and service Grand National excursion trains. You can see the engine shed and coaling tower nearby. It was a very busy area until the 1960s when railway freight traffic into the Port of Liverpool declined due to conrainerisation and the greater use of lorry haulage.
