' Telecommunications cable wound onto wooden drums. These would be lead sheathed, having cotton insulated conductors. Almost certainly these are short lengths kept for cable repairs and route deviation in the network. Complete drums of new cable were usually delivered direct from the manufacturer to the site where it would be put into the network. Almost certainly it is underground cable for installation in earthenware ducts. '
