' The site of Jarrow Palmer's Ship Building yard. Iron ore came in at the west end of the Jarrow riverside area belonging to Palmer's , into the Blast Furnaces and turned into iron and steel. The iron and steel was rolled into plate and ships built with it. Palmers basically turne iron ore into ships. The slag that formed ontop of the ore inside the furnaces was transported as molten slag and tipped on a heap tthat straddled the Jarrow and Hebburn border locally known as 'The Slagheap'.
