Wagon tipper - for discharging coal in one simple turn. Each wagon would have to be uncoupled before being turned over. While not being as efficient as automatic bottom discharge this was certainly an improvement over emptying wagons by hand.
The picture shows a wagon that has been turn through about 80 degrees, with it 'sign-written' side facing upwards. '
