The Britain from Above website will soon be changing. The good news is you’ll still be able to search for and view the fantastic Aerofilms images. You’ll also be able to continue to add your comments, photographs and pins– enabling you to carry on sharing your memories and knowledge about places and buildings with other users of the website. The new site will be designed for use on mobile phones and tablets so you’ll be able to do all of this on the move!
During the life of the Britain from Above project, over 250 Groups were set up by users with interests in specific places or themes. Since the project ended, these have been less active and it now makes sense to freeze the Groups. While this means you won’t be able to start any new groups or add any more content you’ll still be able to view what has been added in the past. We’ll also be highlighting some of the amazing resources which were created by these groups, which are a legacy of the project.
These changes will be taking place over the next few weeks and some functions on this site will be unavailable while we carry out this work.

From 23rd of May until 30th May, users will no longer be able to login or register on this site. Thanks for your patience.

About me

I'm David Lovell and I live in Warminster Wiltshire.
I am retired now but my last job was for First Great Western at Westbury where we operated a few Class 31 locomotives on services to Weymouth and Brighton. Hence the name.
I was born in Bath and moved to Merthyr Tydfil when I was eight. I have since lived in Titley, Herefordshire, Redhill, Surrey, Darlington Co. Durham, Redcar, Cleveland, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, Trowbridge and Warminster in Wiltshire. For most of my career I have been involved in public passenger transport.
From an early age I have been fascinated by maps and when I was younger I was interested in orienteering which kept me fit as well as allowing me to hone my map reading skills. I was also a keen hill walker largely in Northern England and Snowdonia.
I have been particularly interested in the unlocated images and I was able to locate a good number of these but I fear that those which remain to be located may be too difficult to locate.
I hope everyone can enjoy the Britain from Above website as much as I have.
If you enjoy this site you might like to look at the Historic England Enrich the List project which enables members of the public to add photographs to the official listing particulars for listed buildings in England.

Hi David. I noticed your comment on Aberbargoed. I was born in Caerphilly but I grew up in Bargoed. I see you live in Warminster, I have been there as a stop off on my way to visitr friends in Salisbury. I now live in Poole in Dorset with my partner Nicola and our son Adam.

I am currently designing an electrical system to control corrosion in the Middle Slip jetty at Portsmouth Naval Yard and would very much like to use your very good photograph of the jetty (Photo: P1130586) on the front screen page of the small laptop computer that will control the electrical system (actually a cathodic protecton system). I would ike to get permission to do this and after unsuccessful discussions with Britain from the Air I understand that the photograph is your copyright? May I use the photograph as it fits with the project? Kevin Davies.

Good afternoon David. I noticed a set of aerial photos of the Madoc Quarry near Blaenau Ffestiniog from the 1950s. My old family home was Tan-y-Manod, an old house dating from the 17thC, somewhere around Manod Mawr, destroyed in the 1960s I believe. Do you recognize the name, and/or have any photographs of its precise (former) location? Many thanks, John

Hi, I work for the London Festival of Baroque Music (www.lfbm.org.uk) and we have been looking for a good picture of St Peter's Eaton Square to use on this year's website as it is one of our concert venues. I came across the image you uploaded to this website and I was wondering if you might be kind enough to grant us permission to use it on our website? I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Alison Fox
