On the evenings of March 13th and 14th 1941, an estimated 250 German bombers attacked targets on Clydeside and caused extensive damage and heavy casualties. This picture shows the spot where one bomb came down between a Tram and a Tenement at the corner of Centre Street/Nelson Street. The blast was so powerful that it killed three French sailors in the Broomielaw on the other side of the river. Some 110 people died and a further 118 were injured. Eleven of those who died were in the tram from where, despite its complete destruction, 20 people were rescued.” |
