FAO Mike Holder - Location for this picture might be High Post aerodrome National Aviation day May 3rd 1933 compare it please with pictures EAW046872 thru EAW046880. 072 is close to the same view point as EPW041085. Twenty years between the images as well as WW2 and the aerodrome closing and reverting to agriculture. The OS map I can access online only shows the area prior to the aerodromes creation. Thanks Max.

Max - not happy with High Post which was the site for the Salisbury display which you rightly say was on 3 May 1933.

I have had a lot of trouble sorting this one out using the Fleeting Peace web site which has Cobham's itinerary for 1933.

If you look closely at the photo you can see the parachutists body shadow to the right of the fence; if you look to the left edge you can see a parachute's shadow - so he was using 2 parachutists at once. The only report I can find in the papers covering this occurrence is the West Clandon display on 22/23 April 1933. But he was back at Radstock on 18 May 1933 and that was carried our at Clandon. So using the shadows - what time do you think the photo was taken. The first display took place in the afternoon and the second display took place in the evening. http://astro.ukho.gov.uk/nao/services/ais58.pdf gives you the height of the sun at 51 30N. If we can sort out the time of the shot we can sort out the orientation of the woods and field patterns. m.holder50@btinternet.com if you want to liaise direct.

I had a go at measuring the height of the sun - it's about 40 degrees and for that height in mid May the time would be just after 1500 GMT. The azimuth would be 245 in round figures and in1933 the clocks went forward on the 09 April to summer time. This is about one hour and 30 mins into the start of the show - assuming it is an Alan Cobham spectacular. Looking at the shadows from the fence - that's on 305/125. If it was on 335/155 the shadow would be at a right angle but it's further round clockwise by about 30 degrees which would put it closer to E/W. I think I've got my angles right(?).
