Tram changeover pit. The point where trams would change from collecting electric power from overhead wires to the conduit system where a rail was buried beneath the roadway and trams would pickup power by means of a plough. The LCC was a major user of the conduit system, which proved to be rather expensive, whereas other companies prefered the overhead. Naturally, where through running was required, at the point where the two systems met it was necessary to make a change, hence the 'changeover pit'. Here the plough would be inserted and the pole pulled down, or the plough 'shot out' and the pole raised. This was one of the interesting aspects of London's tram operation.
