Believe the theory that this is the set of When Knights Were Bold to be accurate. Article in the Western Press 25 Feb 1930 says that - "There is in the film, which is wonderfully photographed, a glorious mediæval battle at the castle built specially for that purpose at Stanmore, where knight in armour and hundreds of men-at-arms storm the battlements." 'Battlements' with no thickness and propped by timber

This looks like an inner timber structure supporting very thin outer skins - sham 'walls'

Is this 'castle' completely 'bogus' because it is in fact a film set?

It does appear to be a 'set'. The turret on the left hand side is incomplete, and the whole thing is just the front section of a 'castle'. We need a film buff for this one. A silent film buff, at that. Was there a silent Robin Hood film?

After a lot of searching maps for field boundaries I've finally found it!!! It was Limes Farm but is now The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The red square is where I believe the film set would have been. The fields and tree lines can be seen in the bottom left corner of EPW053036 where the building is in the same field as the film set was. Also the fields can be seen in the top left of EPW020213 taken in Jan 1928 and the film set is not there at that time which suggests the film in question was relased after 1928 adding to the "When Knights were Bold" case

We have some fundamental differences of opinion here. Is this a photo from 14th November 1928 or is it a more recent photo from 1952? We need some answers to this fundamental question before we can move forward. I'm sure that Swindon can confirm the date and tell us if it was on a glass negative. This should then dispel some red herrings. Thanks

Well, just to throw the cat among the pigeons, I think this might be the 1952 set for Robin Hood and his Merrie Men at Denham Studios.

This location looks just like the field next to what was Borehamwood College in the mid 1960's and used for film sets by MGM Studios. I attended the college from 1964 and often watched them building the sets and filming from the classrooms.

Looks like Fotheringhay Castle. I believe the county is Northamptonshire or Northants. "Caldervale"

I can confirm that this is not the 1950s Ivanhoe film set - we've got some photos of that under construction in 1951 which will appear on this website in due course.

Best wishes

Nick Pitt is mistaken when he says 'When Knights Were Bold' did not involve knights or a castle. I have just watched the 1936 talkie version. The hero returns to the ancestral castle and later having received an unfortunate blow to the head has a dream where he defends the castle in the fifteenth century. Warwick Castle stars as the ancestral pile but the dream castle appears to be a set. I hesitate to say it is the one in the photo although there are similarities and I suggest it could be a remodelled version. Regards.

According to this site http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=164907

and others the Ivanhoe castle in 1952 looked like this

It was the fortress built by MGM and used in the 1952 film Ivanhoe,it was built on the backlot of the Elstree film studio`s if this helps

If BigglesH is correct in connecting this photo to Borehamwood it raises the possibility that this is the set for the 1929 release 'When Knights Were Bold' which was actually filmed in 1928. It's very tenuous, and I can't find any stills from the film to confirm it.

I think this may be a red herring as the subject matter of that film was nothing to do with castles and knights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Knights_Were_Bold_%28play%29).

According to wickipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Knights_Were_Bold_%281929_film%29) the 1928/9 film was shot at Stoll Studios, Cricklewood not Borehamwood. Cricklewood is only about 8 miles away and quite built up at this time so not impossible that the exteriors would have been built further out, but I don't think this is it.

As I said, the link is tenuous, but how many castle sets were there in 1928? Perhaps someone has a better idea.

Thanks everyone for taking a look at this one. We have tried to place this film set "on the ground" in Borehamwood but have been unable to make any of the field boundaries around/behind the studio buildings fit. If anyone can spare some time to look more closely it would be very helpful!

As the Aerofilms librarian who 'turned the lights out' on the archive (a personal tragedy, but the nation's gain I s'pose) I can confirm this is a film set at Borehamwood. I reckon Tiny Tim has nailed it. A similar set was built in the 1950s for 'Ivanhoe' and remained erected for a decade or so, being re-used several times.

Hi Ex_Aerofilms_Librarian and everyone who as commented. Thanks for making the time to investigate this one.

We will look into this suggestion and make the changes to the website as appropriate.

Kind regards

This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Elstree_Studios_productions might help in narrowing down which film this was made for. The first British International Pictures film at Elstree/Borehamwood was made in 1927, but there were other studios in the area working before that time and later, so there is a chance this set belonged to another studio.

Since adjacently sequenced photos relate to British International Pictures at Borehamwood, is it too much to assume it belongs to them ?
