This image is displayed reversed (left to right). The semi-circular "timber pond" should be on the left.

The view is looking southeast towards Barry No.2 Dock towards the Bristol Channel. Behind the "saw-tooth" roofed building is the engine house and chimney of the hydraulic plant which supplied "power" to dockside cranes and possibly the coal wagon hoists.

The houses are on Jewel Street, with shorter streets leading down to Dock View Road which runs along the top of the low cliff, below which are the storage sidings for coal trains.

Unfortunately this has been printed back to front. It shows the north east end of Barry Docks from the landward side, with Sully Bay in the background.

I do believe that this plate needs to be reversed, it is of Barry Dock No2, Hayes Farm is at the top right in this photo but that should be top left at the time before Sully Hospital, from left to right you have Burlington St, Coigne Terrace, Morgan St,and you have Jewel St running left to right front.

the chimney stack top right of reversed pic is the old no. 2 hydraulic pump house, there were 3 in all the smallest at the bottom of battery hill, these controlled all of the machinery on the dock, lock gates, capstans, coal tips, bridges etc.

Thanks guys, we'll get this image sorted out - it needs to be flipped AND change identity! A slightly more complicated process than updating the catalogue with new location data, as it means going back to the original negative on the shelf as well as the digital scan and record entry, but nevermind; the important thing is that we can get it right thanks to your help.

This is Barry Number 2 Dock. But the photo is REVERSED. An 'old map' can be seen at this url: http://www.francisfrith.com/barry-docks/maps/#utmcsr=google.co.uk&utmcmd=referral&utmccn=google.co.uk

Hop that works!

Yes, I am sure this is No2 dock, at the Cadoxton end, but reversed. If you look at the image in a mirror the coastline and roads all fit perfectly if you compare the image to Google Earth.

I am not surprised they are having trouble identifying some of the locations if they have scanned some of the negatives the wrong way round.

Barry Docks - this image has been flipped horizontally - the timber pond (half circle shaped) should be to the east of the dock shown in the picture.

This is Barry Dock at the Cadoxton end, however the image is reproduced back to front and needs to be reversed.

Dave beat me to it. The image is reversed. The curved railway line and still extant warehouses are the big clue. The street in the foreground is Jewel Street.
