The line from Plymouth opened in 1859. The station was a terminus until the route was extended to Launceston in 1865. The stone structure to the left of the overall roof was built in 1887 as a replacement for the original wooden building, lost in a fire. The Western Region station - previously Great Western - was renamed Tavistock South in 1949, following Nationalisation, to distinguish it from the Southern Region's Tavistock North |
