A magnificent view of Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge (1864), looking ENE from the Somerset side. In the right foreground is "Burwalls", which later became a university hall of residence for men. The bridge led to the development of a high class suburb at Leigh Woods, including the distinctive "Alpenfels" on North Road. On the far side of the Avon Gorge is the superior suburb of Clifton, which was built from the 1780s.
