Castle Street Methodist Church. I think this was the Primitive Methodist chapel; the one further to the west on Edgeley Road opposite the park was the Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The reunion of Methodists in 1932 gradually rendered the number of chapels unnecessary, and this church building was sold off for a shopping development some time in the '60s/70s. A stone in the wall of the Somerfield supermarket on Castle Street recalls the chapel's graveyard, and the human remains that were reinterred. The money raised from the sale of the Castle Street chapel enabled the reconstruction of the remaining Edgeley Methodist chapel opposite the park.

It's actually the other way around! The Primitive Methodist Chapel was next door to us on Edgeley Road and I have volumes of correspondence between my father and the church officials on the subject of rights of way.

These Georgian houses are in fact 8 and 10 Edgeley Road (the latter is my house). There were houses in Greenhill Terrace (the unpaved road running up the East side of No. 10)and these were Victorian or Edwardian, with access onto Chapel St. They were demolished in 1967(?) and the social functions part of the Methodist Church now occupies the site.
