The great meander in the River Severn provided the original reason for it being selected as a settlement site. With its narrow neck of land around the castle to the north (left) it was easy to defend in the troubled territory of the Welsh Marches. By the time of this picture the river was perceived as an increasing barrier to modern flows of traffic and trade, hence the need for a replacement bridge. Note the temporary bridge just up stream of the new works to maintain access from the area of the town of the south and east.

Mainline to the south that soon splits for Welshpool, Craven Arms and Worcester, indicating just what an important railway centre Shrewsbury, with its station on a bridge over the River Severn, had become. Amazingly, all bar one of the routes from Shrewsbury are still open today although the station is much simplified and many of the surrounding sidings, some of which can be seen here, have been removed.
