Handy Jack's. Now known as Jack's DIY, this shop has been here some years. It was started by brothers I believe - not sure of the year, but it was there from at least the early 1960s.

Cordingly's Sweet Shop. I can still recall the smell of this little shop, a particular favourite of mine in the 1960s!

Whitelegg's. Whitelegg's was a double fronted grocers shop. In the 1960s it was run by Hilda Whitelegg and a lady called Jean who had what I later recognised as a Geordie accent.

Swiss Cottage, Hope Road. This was an unusual little building - can't remember if it was actually called "Swiss Cottage" but that was its nickname. I used to play in the back alleys which led from Swiss Cottage to Thorn Grove, behind.

Queens Hotel outbuildings, where I used to collect beer bottle tops (!)

Sale Baths. This site is now occupied by Sale Leisure Centre, which was built in the early 1970s as I recall. I was told by my family that my grandmother, Emily Bull (or she could have been known as Buckley) used to swim for England and was the person who opened the original Sale Baths, although I never found out if that was true. Perhaps someone reading this might know!

Springfield School caretaker's house. This was occupied by Mr. McNally in the 1960s, when I was there. It was derelict and up for sale recently (2012).

Harley Road Day Nursery (now demolished I believe). My father, Dennis Buckley, was a photographer....he lived at 7 Harley Road, Sale, and he took this from his bedroom window. My mother, Sybil Parrish, used to walk to work here each morning from her home at 22 Hope Road. My father used to watch her every day and to ask her for a date he took this photo, wrote on the back, and threw it out of his bedroom window to my mother, who had to read it and hold up YES or NO in response to what was written on the reverse. She obviously said yes, and when they married they moved in with my grandparents at 22 Hope Road.

Ale shop (off sales). There was a quirky little shop here in the 1960s. It seemed kind of triangular and had "Robinsons Ales" above the door. It is long gone, as is the housing behind it, which was considered quite poor housing in its time. It was nicknamed "Cabbage Row". My father grew up at 7 Harley Road, along with his 10 brothers and sisters. Where they all slept, who knows...!

Sale Cottage Hospital, where I was born. The only thing that remains is the portal which was above the main entrance. The portal is now incorporated into a gatepost along the side of the road.

The Queens Hotel, Hope Road. I used to walk past here as a child and sneak into the outbuildings between the pub and the bowling green and collect bottle tops...I still remember the smell of beer eminating from the place. The bowling green is now gone, replaced by a car park I believe, and I think the pub may now be closed down, although I'm not sure about that!

The Station House - 24 Hope Road. The station master used to live here in this lovely old house until they knocked it down and built old people's flats, which still stand. I grew up next door at number 22.

Springfield Primary School, Springfield Road. My old primary school! A beautiful set of buildings, still bearing the signs for "boys" and "girls" over the separate entrances.

"Brookfield", 22 Hope Road. My grandparents bought this house around 1930 - they got it cheap at £300 because it was reputed to be haunted! I grew up here. Enclosed is a photo I took of my parents standing outside. Not sure of the year, round about 1970 I think.
