34 Styal Road was a house my grandfather had built approx 1916 and where my father & mother lived, my father died (84) here 1999. I lived here from 1945-1971.

Hi There, I am pretty sure that this is Tulip Tree Farm, which later became a garage, the old farm house was still there in the the 60's. Some of the farm buildings were used by Gatley cycle service, and Gatley motorcycles.

Green bank was down Old Hall Road and then left, where Green Bank Laundry used to be.

Interesting - I took the name from the 1910 OS map rather than from certain personal knowledge; the map shows both the house concerned as "Green Bank", and Greenbank laundry in the place where you describe it, on Old Hall Lane. I may be misreading the map, but I don't think so - the configuration of buildings at that point seems pretty unambiguous. Or possibly the house may have had a change of names: one property I knew - it's been demolished now - on the Timperley/Baguley border seems to have had three different names successively between 1875 and the 1960s.

Hello again!! I stand corrected!! After more research, I have discovered that the house on Stonepail Road was in fact called Green Bank which was next to a farm, the name of which I am unsure. In or about 1914 the house had a large Yew hedge round it and in the middle of the lawn was a large Tulip tree. The owner was a Mr Shinwell a cotton merchant in Manchester! The house was later sold to a family called Bracegirdle who opened it as a garage called the Tulip Tree Garage. The business was registered 18/12/1934 as Gatley Autos. I did in fact consider buying the garage with two colleagues in 1982 when it came up for sale.
