I don;t know if this was a private house in 1926, but when I was a child in the 1960s in Middleton, this was the 'Old Town Hall' and there was an ugly white office block built behind it as the 'New Town Hall', more or less where the ornamental gardens are in this picture. Rochdale council later took over and completely destroyed the centre of Middleton with a hideous Arndale centre, and the 'New Town Hall' became the Water Board I think.

In the 1920's this was a private home called Parkfield House.

the Town Hall in the 1920's was in the centre of Middleton close to where the arena is now.

Yes, this was Parkfield House and was originally the residence of Thomas Ashton JP in 1848. The estate was sold to Harvey Heywood and he would become the first Mayor of Middleton in 1886. The new Town Hall was also called Parkfield House and opened by my grandad, Frank Sansom JP, in 1966 when he was the Mayor of Middleton.

The Arndale Centre and most of the redevelopment of the town centre was actually planned in the 1960s and a part of Middleton Borough Council's improvement plan (which also got rid of many of the slum housing in the town). The Arndale Centre I believe opened in 1972 and Rochdale 'took over' Middleton in 1974.
