In this period the prison was a military prison and the officers married quarters were in the debters prison, so I think it very likely that the tennis courts were for the use of the officers and other prison staff and certainly not the inmates :-)

Cannon? There were cannon on the New Walk and flanking the Blue bridge in this period, captured following the Crimean War, but not aware of any near the site of the old Castlegate postern.

No, not tennis courts. It is called the Eye of York. This is the very centre of the City of York. York is not in any Riding of Yorkshire but where all the Ridings meet. So this is considered the very centre of Yorkshire

Thank you, I know it's called the Eye of York. It also has, at this time, tennis courts on it, clearly visible if you use the image controls to zoom in.

The Boer War memorial has clearly been moved a little to accommodate the new road layout here.

The castle walls facing Tower Street were black and hideously overwhelming. Despite this a few people objected to their being demolished. The view from Tower Street became beautiful.

Those walls do look very forbidding indeed!

This building was the first premises of Airspeed Ltd, the aircraft manufacturing company. The author Nevil Shute was one of its founders. Airspeed occupied the building 1931-1933. Now viewed as an eyesore or 'that old bus garage in Piccadilly. Due to be demolished.

To clarify - following the comment below - "The old bus garage is just off picture at the right hand side and nearly half-way down." The bus garage is a long building, one end of it is on the complete image if you pan across.
Airspeed did apparently only occupy half of it - the other end, which is out of shot.

Great view of what used to be next to Clifford's Tower, where now there is car park. Many other points of interest, some marked with pins.
Saturday 30th June
9:18pm
For as long as any of us can remember, this site next to Clifford's Tower has been a rather dull car park area, since these 19th century additions to the castle site were demolished in the 1930s.
