The main street of Sheffield High Street is shown going right to left and was widened in the late Victorian erea but some of the old street layout of narrow lanes off the street can be seen. The large building to the right of this street (and to the bottom isde) is Walshes Department store. It was a well established Sheffield firm with an ezxcellent reputation. The street in from of this buiding and going top to bottom is Angle Street. Half way along this road on the right was Cockaynes Department store, another old establsihed Sheffield firm. Most of this area was destroyed in WW2. Both firms re-opened in new buildings and survived until the 1970s.
