This photograph is of particular interest to me. It was where I grew up. The gas works became McAdams tar works in the late 1930's.
The long road is the North Circular Road pre modernization.
The single railway line is the loop line linking the Down Brent Sidings to the Up Brent Sidings. The branch off was for the then gas works. (Walked this many times as a child pre 1938)
The road along side the gas work is Brent Terrace wholly owned my the Midland Railway.

Is this not the north-east end of the Brent Sidings rather than north-west ? The location is adjacent to what is now Brent Terrace off Tilling Road off the North Circular Road.
The part of the Sidings in view is now mostly derelict and the Gas Works long gone.
The Gas Works site is occupied by more modern commercial premises at this time.

Dear Yardbird 1,
Thank you very much for your suggestion. We've double checked on our mapping and we can confirm that the compass direction given in the caption is correct.
Although the Gas Works are to the north-east of the railway sidings it is the north-west end of the sidings, based upon the direction in which the line is travelling, that we have used in our caption.
I hope this makes the caption direction clearer.
Thanks again,
Alexander Treliving (Britain from Above Cataloguer, EH)
