| Tollgate and Tollhouse on the Lower Sandgate Road. At the time of the photo this was a private toll road running from the harbour to Sandgate and belonged to the Radnor Estate. |

Lord Radnor owned the land, built a road between Folkestone and Sandgate and charged tolls for its use. By 1820 there was a wooden Toll House that was later replaced by the stone building in this picture. |
