Binderton House - Binderton Lane, West Dean, West Sussex PO18 0RX Grade 2* listed building - English Heritage Building ID: 301409 Large house of about 1680. Main portion two storeys. Seven windows. Red brick. An external inscription carries the date 1677. At the north end is a long L-shaped service wing of lower elevation and older date. Remodelled about 1780. More recently the long south wing was destroyed by fire (1970's). Only the stump of the south range is left but the north range is complete. Binderton House itself, has now been divided up into flats. Binderton "new" Chapel, across the road, was built c 1671 by Thomas Smith of Binderton House, to replace the old Parish Church about 200 metres north of Binderton House which had been demolished by his father c.1660 "because it stood in his light". (In 1611 the old church chancel was decayed and some of the rafters had fallen into it). The new "chapel" was restored in 1984. But this new chapel was never consecrated due to a row with the church, who continued to be a bit miffed about the whole affair, even going so far as to refuse initially to bury Smith when his time came to meet his maker. By Victorian times the chapel was in use as a barn (his body had been removed in 1839). Restoration work in 1984. The image to the left is from 2006 and is by and copyright Simon Carey. Defra mark this as the site of Binderton Chapel (never consecrated) - the English Heritage database appears to be in error in placing the chapel far to the North in West Dean. The image is public domain, and was taken in 2012 and the location of the image is as marked here. Source of image: [[commons:File:Former Binderton Chapel, Binderton (NHLE Code 1354654).JPG]] British Listed Buildings incorrectly mark it as being far to the North in West Dean.

This is Singleton Railway Station on the Southern Railway. Originally London Brighton and South Coast Railway. On the former line between Chichester and Midhurst. It was opened on 11 July 1881. Goodwood Racecourse was an uphill walk from here- racegoers preferred to walk from Chichester. Passenger services were withdrawn on 6 July 1935. Freight services remained until these were withdrawn on 28 August 1953 by British Railways. Stations to the North (top) are Cocking and Midhurst. Stations to the South (bottom) are Lavant and Chichester.
