A Tram bound for Greenwich Church on recently opened temporary bridge across Deptford creek. Below this structure can be seen the original bridge, with tramway, which was constructed in1910 - 1913. Operation Tramaway was underway and routes 68 and 70 which crossed the creek here were due to be abandoned on 10th July 1951. Unfortunately for LT due to the parlous state of the bridge needing replacement, and with insufficiant diesel buses unavailable to replace the trams, they had to go to the expense of laying conduit track on the replacement bridge. The westbound track was opened on 10th July 1949, and the eastbound track on the 30th July. The new bridge was opened in March 1954. Like the original bridge the temporary bridge could be lifted to allow shipping to pass up the creek. |
