site of train crash which occured on the evening of 11th June 72. An excursion running from Margate to Kentish Town exceeded the 20 MPH speed restriction round the severe curve here and derailed down the embankment. the driver was included among the 6 fatalities, and 126 other people were injured. The cause of the derailment was put down to excess speed and blamed the driver for being unattentive to his duties probably due to the influence of alcohole.
