Does look like LAING. The same name appears on quite a few as yet unidentified images. The firm of Jogn Laing & Son did work on some open-cast contracts. |

Given the other locations on this flight, I think that we have a good chance that we are looking at sandpits in the area just to the south of the North Downs, possibly Runfold, Surrey. This is just to the east of Hale. The features seen will no longer be there, so a contemporary photo from local archives may be the only chance of confirming it. The sand worked in this area is Folkestone Beds of the Lower Greensand. |

Face shovel & draglines on these 3 pictures are quite small but then the date is quite early. Was there much open cast coal mining in 1948? Not much coal in evidence, mainly light-coloured top hamper, but there does seem to be a dark seam/stratum in the background. |

This appears to be an ironstone mine or some other quarry extracting minerals,but not coal as the ground is not dark enough for that. Could be sand,gravel etc. |

I'm sorry Cabby but I can not agree with your comments about the activity taking place in this series of photographs. If we accept that these three or four photos are of the same place it is almost certain that the activity is open cast coal mining. There is a line of lorries waiting to be loaded with the black stuff in one of the other photos. Even in this photo there is a band of black to be seen. There is every probability this is a Laing open cast coal site. It could even be in the Smalley area but we can't prove it, yet. |

This series of three photographs are of the same location. EAW015497 EAW015498 EAW015499 There is an overlap with the same information on each of the three photographs. EAW015500 is probably of the same location but I cannot identify anything positively as being at the same location, apart from a very large hole in the ground! |
