The camp to the left of the railway line looks idyllic on a warm September day with lots of people outside. What was the purpose of the camp? Was it a prisoner of war camp? Does anyone know? Today rhere is nothing to show that a camp existed on this site.

It seems a bit small for a POW camp. From the list on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_prisoner-of-war_camps_in_the_United_Kingdom and http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/LIST%20OF%20UK%20POW%20CAMPS1.htm (2 pages) I can't see any nearby, but perhaps these are not complete lists.

According to Mr Holton on 'BBC WW2 People's War' :

"I was a small child, born in 1937, so I was 2 when the war started. I was living in Usk in 1944. There was a transit camp for American soldiers nearby. We used to ask them if they had any chewing gum. They gave us gum or sweets or cake."

Thanks c. As this image (i.e. negative, digital surrogate and data) need to be transferred to RCAHMW it'll take a bit longer to get this one updated, but nevertheless we'll update the catalogue and post the new data here in due course.

Well done again c. This is another fascinating photo of an interesting location with the Usk Railway Station goods yard situated on the west side of the River Usk because of the limited space on the east side of the river where the passenger station was sandwiched between the river and a tunnel. I had thought that the station might be Great Western but I had no idea that it was Usk.
