  • In 1950 Hayes had at least 3 Cycle Speedway Clubs, the Hayes Broadsiders who had a track in Hayes Townhall Park, The Hayes Meteors whose track was in North Hyde Rd. in a field behind Waterslash Lane and right next to the River Crane. The third club whose name I have forgoten, I think was centered in the Bourne Avenue area. All the Clubs participated in the Thames Valley League that covered south west Middlesex and north Surrey. The bikes had no brakes, the competition was fierce and crashes were frequent. Teams and their bikes travelled to away matches in furniture vans, no H&S then. Tracks were mostly built by the local youth themselves on any piece of spare land they could get their hands on, it didn't seem to be too much of a problem then.

  • Just joined. Interesting group. Born and in Hayes from 1959 to 1981 and I'm particularly interested in the industrial/transport heritage of the town. One of the old photos in the main Britain from above site of Hayes Station taken in 1930 clearly shows the old parcels/goods shed right alongside the railway station (the shed is the large light coloured building in the photo). But it also shows another 3 or 4 lines of sidings running to the right of the shed where the sidings appeared to run right up to edge of Station Approach itself. Some time in the mid-to late1960s they built a white coloured two storey block comprising shops and a laundrette with flats above, where the end of the sidings would have been (this block has been recently demolished). I have a vague memory, as a boy, of being able to see wagons and things parked up from station approach (or at least the old rusting siding tracks) before that 60s building went up. But I am not sure if my memory is playing tricks, those sidings may have disappeared long before I was born. Does anyone recall being able to see them in the 50s or early 60s?

  • Hi All,

I grew up in North Hillingdon back in the 1960's and wondered if anybody had any old photographs of any of the Police Boxes that stood in our area (Hillingdon, Uxbridge, Hayes, Cowley,Southall, etc) That they could share please?
The only two I have is the Hayes Town Photo and this one taken at Hillingdon Circus back in 1950.

    Many Thanks,

    Pete

  • In the photograph, at the pedestrian crossing, is the Nash open-top car that I recall driving up and down Coldharbour lane in the mid-50s. It was red and cream in colour and the cars were made under licence by Austin. Right in the photograph is mens clothing store, Penningtons, which supplied me and my brother with our purple-edged-with-yellow Townfield school uniforms. Alongside the Nash is the Cooperative food shop, and hard right is the junction with Pump Lane which, in the mid-50s, led to Kraft's cheese factory and Crosse and Blackwell soup factory, amongst others, alongside the railway line to Paddington.

  • This is looking north up Coldharbour Lane with East Avenue to the left, Pump Lane (out of shot) to the right, Botwell Lane, hard left, Station Road behind the camera. The police box was, in the 1950s, accompanied by a Fire Brigade alarm post. On East Avenue was the Odeon cinema, known as the Amabassdors, which was pulled down in the 1960s to make way for a BT telephone exchange.

  • I love this photograph. It was scanned from a book of Great Western Railway publicity department photographs. I came along a five decades after this shot and remember the fascination of watching the gates come down and a slow line of freight wagons roll over Station Road and into the factories that lined the canal. The ritual happened every weekeday morning and late afternoon. Factories included Crompton-Parkinson who made large electrical generators and sub-power stations.

  • Looking south towards the junction with Station Road. Almost left was a toy shop in the 1950s, now a funeral parlour! On the right was a record shop, one half, the other occupied by a stationers who sold us Platignum and Osmid pens for school, plus my art supplies - cartridege paper books and paints. Rowley, in a shop hard left in the photograph, sold bicycles while his brother, in a separate shop, sold electrical goods furrher north on Broadway Parade, Coldharbour Lane, near where I lived, on the GWR railway estate.
