The Cliff Sidings up home signal. This would have been kept at danger to protect trains entering or leaving the sidings from or to the up line, i.e. the line north towards Tamworth and Derby, coming towards us in the photograph.

Trailing connection into the private siding. Where possible connections to sidings like this were always in the trailing direction, ie trains had to reverse into them, as it was much safer, with a greatly reduced risk of trains on the main running line accidentally being diverted into the siding with disasterous results. The connection at the other end of the siding just this side of the overbridge is also trailing.

According to the 1903 OS there were four cottages in the row, which was called Cliff Cottages. It may also have been known as Rosy Row of course.

In the 1950`s Slateley Hall farm was a working farm,we often rode our bikes through it on our way to fish for sticklebacks and catch newts at the Cliff brickworks pond.
