Peel is the west coast's only sizeable town and the only one on the island to possess a cathedral. The town takes its name from an abbreviated version of St.Patrick's Isle and has a long tradition dating back to the Vikings. For a long time Peel was the centre of the Isle of Man's thriving fishing industry and today the town is noted for its Manx kippers, in addition to its many attractions for tourists.

The town population when this photo was taken was approximately 2,400 and this figure has increased steadily in post-war years to 3,800.
