In old maps this was Jarrow's Lake. Later it was called Jarrow Slake, but locals called it 'Jarra Slacks'. At high tide it flooded. At low tide it became mud flats.

This is the little railway bridge which people used to cross under the railway lines. It would have been used a lot more in the late 40s for council house tenants to access the new Housing Estate eg Brixham Cres, Salcombe Ave, Lulworth etc.

Ruins of medieval monastery. The Saxon monastery where the Venerable Bede wrote many of his works lies partly under the nave of the present neighbouring church of St Paul's. The foundations can still be seen. However, the chancel of the present church dates back to 685AD and a dedication inscription is located above the chancel arch.In the south wall of the chancel there are two very small Saxon windows and one still has Saxon glass in it. This is a must-see attraction if you're in the north-east. The excellent Bede's World museum is not far from the church.
