Barlow Street

Electricity transmission line to the substation. Originally power came from the LYR generating Station at Clifton Junction (1916 - 1933) and was transmitted to Radcliffe substation at high voltage (6.6 kv alternating current). The substation housed three transformers (6.6 kv to 1.2 kv), and three rotary convertors (motor-generator sets) together supplying current at 1200 volts DC to the trains. There were also 580 battery cells for use as an auxiliary backup in the event of a mains failure. Clifton Power Station was closed down in 1933 and current was then taken from the National Grid supply which had been set up in 1926.
