The unique four track layout for trams ascending / descending Dog Kennel Hill. The hill had a ruling gradient of 1 in 11 and a length of 380 yards, originally constructed and opened in 1906 quadrupling of the tracks was completed on 23rd April 1912 and the ruling was that no two trams should occupy the same track on the hill in case of brake failure. HR/2 class tramcars enjoyed a monopoly on the services via the hill. These were of all steel construction, built in 1929 /30 by Hurst Nelson, and had 4 motors to give them extra power on the gradient and making them faster on the level.
