Royal Pavilion South Gate was built in 1921. It is inscribed "This gateway is the gift of India in commemoration of her sons who, stricken in the Great War, were tended in the Pavilion in 1914 and 1915." Dedicated for the people of Brighton by the Maharajah of Patiala on 26 October 1921. |

Between December 1914 and February 1915 the Royal Pavilion became the Indian Military Hospital. From February 1916 to July 1919 it was the Pavilion General Hospital (for limbless men). |
