Is this an interest example of pre-planning permission development? "I wish to build a house on a piece of your field.... you can name the price!" The trouble probably started when the next fellow wanted to do the same thing and so reduce the splendid isolation of the first house.

Hi Maurice,

Remarkable isn't it! And what about access? Looks like the owner had to march along the riverside to get to and from home...

Hullo! Interesting isn't it - whilst continuing with flying boat design and construction, one of Short's responses to the post-WWI aircraft industry slump was to diversify into coach and tram body building. They were doing this at the time of this photo and Graces Guide has some great images of the factory interiors and contemporary bus advertising: http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Short_Brothers_(Rochester_and_Bedford). This seems to have been so significant a part of the business by the late 1930s that the Ordnance Survey even named the buildings as coach building works on its 1:2500 sheet published in 1938.

Neverthless, Shorts are of course best known for flying boats. Perhaps a better caption for this image would be something like "The Short Brothers (Rochester and Bedford) Ltd premises on the River Medway..."; what do you think?
