Before this site was developed for the British Empire Exhibition, the land was part of Wembley Park, a leisure park created by the Metropolitan Railway, who owned the land. During WW1 the army took over the marked area for its Trench Warfare Experimental Dept. Here, amongst other things, it developed the Projector, an early flame-thrower.
