The Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Works was established in 1854. Output was quite diverse. Besides carriages and wagons, I understand that in World War I Handley Page bombers were built here. In World War II the company built tanks such as the Cromwell and Hamilcar gliders for the military. Rolling stock for London Underground featured as did two clases of diesel locomotive - some of which have been preserved - for British Railways. Rolling stock was also exported overseas - for example to Iraq, Egypt, India, Malaya and South Africa. The works closed in 1963
